Rowan University-History. From its humble beginning in 1923 as a school to train teachers for South Jersey classrooms, Rowan University has evolved into a comprehensive university with a strong regional and national reputation. The school was developed in the early 1900s because there was a shortage of teacher training institutions and as a result, many New Jersey teachers lacked proper training. To solve this problem, the state decided to build a two-year training school, known as a normal school, in Southern New Jersey.
